EU REDD Facility
By focusing on addressing land-use governance challenges, the Facility helps reduce deforestation, combat illegal logging and tackle climate change. In doing so, the Facility supports simultaneous progress towards sustainable agriculture, food security and sustainable forest management — all core elements of the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
Two international initiatives offer unprecedented opportunities to address long-standing issues in the forest and land-use sectors:
- REDD+ — Reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation and the role of conservation, sustainable management of forests and enhancement of forest carbon stocks in developing countries
- FLEGT — The EU Forest Law Enforcement, Governance and Trade (FLEGT) Action Plan on illegal logging and associated trade
The Facility therefore focuses its work in three areas where REDD+ and FLEGT processes intersect. It provides support to build institutions, decision-making processes and incentive structures to foster good land-use governance. It clarifies land-use rights and strengthens land-use planning. And it links trends in demand for timber and agricultural commodities with jurisdiction-wide approaches to foster ‘deforestation-free’ production.
By field-testing innovative solutions, the Facility supports national processes in partner countries, in line with national priorities. It works through partnership with a broad range of stakeholders, including government, civil society organisations and the private sector. It also work closely with the EU FLEGT Facility.
The EU REDD Facility engages with countries involved in both the REDD+ and FLEGT processes in Asia and Africa — Cameroon, Côte d’Ivoire, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Indonesia, Laos, the Republic of the Congo and Vietnam — and is looking at ways to expand its work into Latin America.
The EU REDD Facility is funded by the European Union and the Governments of France, Germany, Ireland, Spain and the United Kingdom.
